La Croix des Maquisards
La Croix des Maquisards, a key site of the Resistance in 1944 In May 1944, 23 young members of the MNB (Belgian National Movement) who refused to work for German industry left their homes to build a hut where they lived for a month without incident. But at 4.30am on Friday 23 June, 150 German soldiers attacked the camp. Without weapons, the youngsters could not defend their position. Gilbert ROUMIEUX from the neighbouring village of Ougrée was killed on the spot. Two other boys were captured and a fourth was seriously wounded. All the others hid in the bushes and escaped in all directions taking with them their wounded friend who was bleeding heavily. A month later, their leader Jules DACO from Champlon who had taken refuge in Marcourt' hut was also captured, interrogated and shot dead by the Germans.
