Elan, Manse abbey car park

Arrival

Elan, Manse abbey car park

Atmosphere

In 1148, the Count of Rethel commissioned a monk from the English coast to establish a chapel at Élan. It was here that Saint Roger spent the last years of his life, performing many miracles. One of these was to make the waters of the fountain so icy that they cured love fevers, languor and sterility. From this time onwards, the sepulchre and springs of Élan became a renowned place of pilgrimage. Around 1710, Châteauneud de Rochebonne, bishop of Noyon and abbot of Élan, had a new chapel built and a spring laid out in a succession of pools. In front of the chapel, a pool with three entrances symbolises the Holy Trinity. Another pool, known as ‘la fontaine aux Corbeaux’, dates back to the time of Saint-Roger. The springs now supply drinking water to Élan and its neighbouring towns.
