At Nouzonville, near Charleville-Mézières, a five-minute cycle ride from the Green Way, Amélie and Nicolas have completely renovated a derelict worker's cottage.
With the help of online tutorials, lots of elbow grease and helping hands from their friends and family, the ruin was transformed into a charming gîte sleeping up to four. Locally-sourced materials. Furniture and appliances picked up on special offer or at second-hand shops. Some pieces were also bought from Priscilla Thiery, who upcycles old furniture. The decor is also in the upcycled style, such as some old framed postcards of the French Ardennes, dating back to 1865, picked up on holiday in the Touraine region.
Le Gîte des Grands Ducs ('Eagle-Owls' gîte’) is environmentally friendly: rubbish is sorted for recycling, electricity consumption is minimised and environmentally friendly cleaning products are used. The welcome pack and the tips provided promote minimum food miles.

Of course, there are burgers… the "Nono" with Orval cheese, the "Ardennais" with Rocroi cheese and white pudding, or the "Rustique", the "Fermier", the "Montagnard" and all the classics...
But Nono also puts as much passion into his salads: the "Honneur à l’Ardenne" contains gizzards, black pudding and Maroilles cheese on toast! And veggies have not been forgotten: there are veggie burgers and nuggets, plus vegetable spring rolls and samosas.
As for desserts, there are various competitors, depending on the week, including cheesecake, mousses and tiramisu.
On the drinks menu you'll find Cuvée d’Arthur and Cuvée du Kil next to Chimay, Orval and La Chouffe among the beers, plus soft drinks including Ardennes fruit juices and Rimbaud cider.
At the start of 2021, Nono gave out over 600 reusable fabric bags emblazoned with his name to his customers to cut down his consumption of single-use bags. His customers accepted the challenge and the bags are being used a lot!
