La Ferme de la Planche

José Thiry

“Plank Farm” invites families, schools and other groups to enjoy a beautiful day totally connected to nature.

Family at La Ferme de la Planche

As they walk barefoot along three kilometres of footpath, visitors feel the different textures underfoot along a fun trail designed to demonstrate the variety of walking surfaces made of materials brought together by Mother Nature. Straw, wood, local stone, sand, tree trunks, wood chippings, sawdust and meadow grass… Here and there you’ll pass peacefully grazing animals, including cows, donkeys, sheep and alpacas… You’ll also pass some remarkable viewpoints. An invitation to feel, observe, look, listen and to take the time to stand still and recharge.

To make people aware of the environment, to reconnect people with nature through making them wonder and immediately feel things. This is the challenge for José Thiry. He also uses the cafeteria to raise awareness, for example, through a zero-waste objective and the use of local, sustainable ingredients. Playground accessible to visitors to the barefoot trail. Pets prohibited.

José recommends: Cagette.net at the GAC at Gouvy

The Internet can be used as an ally to reduce food miles. At Gouvy, the GAC (Bulk Buying Group) provides an opportunity for local producers to make contact with customers on the cagette.net platform using the fortnightly distribution meetings it organises.

These local producers include the small-scale artisan coffee roaster Arduina Saveurs from Bertogne; the Ardennes Cheese-makers from Werbomont, who use organic milk from local farms; producers of vegetables and flour; Maraîchage Koeune, a farm producing organic Charolais beef at Vissoule; the Au Vî Pan bakery in Bovigny that bakes sourdough bread in wood-fired ovens; plus producers of jams, honey, chocolate, household cleaning and washing products and cosmetics.

In the same way, the GAC provides a marketplace for products from Oxfam-Magasins du Monde and the Felice Galine co-operative’s organic citrus fruits from Sicily, among others.
