Juan de Hemptinne

The forest, the horse stud and the farm where around 100 cows are raised organically cover the land for as far as you can see. Juan de Hemptinne bases his farming and forestry policy on biodiversity.

Cows at The Red Farm

he has had some success, because, over the years, he has been pleased to see reappear local fauna and flora that had not been seen for a long time.

There is therefore a top-quality environment for the four-bedroom gîte that he has created in the main building of the farmhouse he has completely renovated to minimise its carbon footprint. The heating system is fed by a heat pump that draws heat from under the manure store, where the temperature is 20°C, and from solar panels on the farmhouse roof. It’s a well-thought-out integrated countryside system.

There are no luxury fripperies, just authentic comfort. Solid furniture made by local carpenters and a garden with a delightful view. Peace and quiet are assured as the nearest neighbour is 800m away.

Juan recommends: Le Hangar

Not far from the town square in Anhée, next to the road from Namur to Dinant, The Hangar opened to the public in 2020, with the aim of steering consumers to buy local, from Belgium and elsewhere. Olivier Bavay likes to put local produce in the spotlight, but not only that. “It’s not just locally that we make good products. Other regions have their specialities and offer different scents and tastes, depending on their climates.”

In his small shop, we find, for example, artisan-made jam from Bièvre, organic stewed fruit from Fosses-la-Ville, dried fruit “because it’s very good for you”, sausages and hams from Pondrôme made by a butcher from meat from animals raised on his farm, and also his home-made preserved olives and tapenades and goat’s-milk and sheep’s-milk cheeses from Maredret, in the Molignée valley
